Brisbane Airport Flight Path Changes Post Implementation Review

This project is closed.

Panoramic render of the Brisbane Airport New Runway at dusk

Brisbane Airport’s new runway and the associated flight paths commenced operations on 12 July 2020. These flight paths have changed the way aircraft operate as they arrive and depart from Brisbane Airport.

Brisbane Airport Corporation and Airservices continue to work with stakeholders across community, government and industry to ensure that the Brisbane Airport operations meet the highest safety standards and incorporate the most environmentally sustainable practices wherever practicable.

For information on current aircraft operations visit our interactive Aircraft in Your Neighbourhood website here.

  • Brisbane Airport Runway Maintenance Update

Maintenance work is scheduled to be carried out on the legacy runway (01R/19L) on Wednesday 7 December 2022, from 10:30AM to 4:00PM.

You may notice a temporary change to aircraft operations during this work, as all arrivals and departures will use the new parallel runway (01L/19R).

This work will not affect the noise improvement trials currently underway, including extended Simultaneous Opposite Direction Parallel Runway Operations (SODPROPS) hours and limited intersection departures on the new parallel runway.

If you have any questions about the runway maintenance, please contact Brisbane Airport Corporation by email at feedback@bne.com.au.

If you have specific questions or complaints about aircraft operations, please contact our Noise Complaints and Information Service (NCIS).

  • Brisbane Airport Runway Maintenance Update

Maintenance work will be carried out on the Brisbane Airport runways from Monday 28 to Wednesday 30 November 2022.

The aircraft taxiway near the new runway end 01L is scheduled to close on Monday, 28 November, from 10:00AM to 5:00PM. Some aircraft that would usually depart from RWY 01L may require departure from legacy runway end 01R.

The new runway (01L/19R) is scheduled to close on Tuesday, 29 November 2022, from 10:00AM to 4:00PM. You may notice a temporary change to aircraft operations during this work, as all arrivals and departures will use the legacy runway (01R/19L).

The legacy runway (01R/19L) will have a displaced threshold (shorter runway length) on Wednesday, 30 November 2022, from 7:00 AM to 4:30PM:

    • You may notice steeper approach profiles to runway 01R during this displacement
    • Some aircraft that would usually depart from RWY 01R may require departure from new parallel runway 01L
    • Some aircraft that would usually arrive to RWY 01R may require arrival to new parallel runway 01L

These works will not affect the noise improvement trials currently underway, including extended Simultaneous Opposite Direction Parallel Runway Operations (SODPROPS) hours and restricted intersection departures on the new parallel runway.

If you have any questions about the runway maintenance, please contact Brisbane Airport Corporation by email at: feedback@bne.com.au.

If you have specific questions or complaints about aircraft operations, please contact our Noise Complaints and Information Service (NCIS).

  • Brisbane Airport Runway Maintenance Update

Brisbane Airport Corporation will be conducting maintenance work on the new parallel runway (01L/19R). The maintenance works are scheduled on the following dates:

    • Thursday, 3 November 2022, 9:30PM – 5:00AM
    • Wednesday, 9 November 2022, 9:30PM – 5:00AM
    • Friday, 11 November – Monday, 14 November 2022, 8:00PM – 5:00AM

The above dates are subject to change if works are completed ahead of schedule.

If maintenance works are unable to proceed as scheduled on the weekend of 11 to 14 November (i.e. due weather), the works will be rescheduled for Friday, 25 November – Monday, 28 November 2022.

During the works, the new parallel runway (01L/19R) will be closed. Community members may notice a temporary change to aircraft operations during this work, as all arrivals and departures will be conducted using the legacy runway (01R/19L).

This work will affect the use of Simultaneous Opposite Direction Parallel Runway Operations (SODPROPS) where all operations are over the bay – including regular night time operations and the current trial to extend the use of SODPROPS.

If you have any questions about the runway maintenance, please contact Brisbane Airport Corporation by email at: feedback@bne.com.au.

If you have specific questions or complaints about aircraft operations, please contact our Noise Complaints and Information Service (NCIS).

  • Draft PIR Report Released

Airservices is pleased to share the Brisbane New Parallel Runway Flight Paths Post Implementation Review (PIR) Draft Report.

This report presents our recommendations developed over the course of the PIR, guided by community and industry feedback.

The draft report is available in two formats:

We have provided both formats for convenience, noting the document with appendices will take longer to download.

The Draft Report is now available for a four-week public comment period.

    Feedback can be provided here.

Please provide feedback by Sunday 20 November 2022.

In addition to feedback on the Draft Report, we are also interested in receiving feedback on how we can best engage with the Brisbane community on the recommendations that progress through to design and further assessment. What engagement methods and information channels are most effective in your community?

We would like to thank the Brisbane community for participation in the PIR to this point and welcome your feedback on the Draft Report.

  • Draft PIR Report Update

Airservices would like to thank the Brisbane community for your participation in the PIR to date.

We received a large amount of feedback through the community workshops and are continuing to work through this. As a result, we need a little more time to complete the draft PIR report.

We are aiming to complete the draft report and release it for public review and comment in mid-October.

  • Brisbane PIR Update - Community Workshop Recordings & Daylight Savings NAP

    Toombul Bowls Club

    Samford Farmers Hall

    Colmslie Hotel, Morningside

At the request of the community members who attended the Upper Brookfield Hall and University of Queensland, St Lucia community workshops, the recordings have not been published.

    DAYLIGHT SAVINGS NOISE ABATEMENT PROCEDURE

Brisbane Noise Abatement Procedures (NAPs) prioritise the use of runway 19 operations, where arrivals occur over water and departures occur over land, when conditions prevent the use of modes that direct all movements over water.

The peak departure period for Brisbane Airport is generally between 6 - 8am, with only limited arrivals during this time. With Daylight Saving commencing in other Australian states and territories on 2 October 2022, the morning peak departure period will commence from 5am to enable timely arrival of flights in other cities. To reduce the impact of these early morning departures on communities close to the airport and subject to lower aircraft operations, Airservices is proposing to change the runway priority over this Daylight Saving period to prioritise departures over water, where wind direction allows.

We are currently finalising a safety assessment to amend the Noise Abatement Procedure (NAP) and expect to deliver this change in October 2022. We will provide further information ahead of commencing this new NAP operation.

  • PIR Community Workshops – Complete

Thank you to all community members who joined the Brisbane Airport Flight Path Changes Post Implementation Review (PIR) community workshops. Your feedback is appreciated and will inform the next steps in the PIR.

A copy of the presentation is available here.

We are working to upload the workshop recordings as quickly as possible, but due to file size it is taking some time.

As discussed in the workshops, Airservices will publish a draft PIR report in October for a public comment period.
