The View from Moorabbin Tower
Edition 3, June2025
Welcome to the next instalment of ‘The View from Moorabbin Tower’ newsletter (Edition 3!). We hope this initiative continues to provide operational learnings that keep pilots and operators informed and safe, both on the ground and in the air.
In the third edition of The View from Moorabbin Tower, you’ll find guidance and tips on how to fly an ‘Oblique’ leg of the circuit (on arrival or departure), along with guidance on how to avoid the tendency to fly the clearance you may be been expecting rather than the clearance you actually received! There’s also some insight into the improving operational safety occurrence trend being witnessed at MB, along with further examples of great airmanship….keep up the great work!

The View from Moorabbin Tower
Edition 1, September 2024
Moorabbin is the third busiest Metro D aerodrome in Australia (2024), serving as on of Australia's key flight training locations.
It is a complex operating environment with unique characteristics such as:
- a diverse range and large volume of aircraft operations, incl. commercial, freight and training
- an airspace structure adjoining the high-density airspace of the Melbourne Basin
- a complex aerodrome layout with a parallel crossing runway configuration.
In this newsletter, we detail several operational scenarios which are common within complex aerodromes such as Moorabbin, including some of the contributing factors and tips mitigate these scenarios. With the volume of aircraft operations in the Melbourne Basin expected to grow, it is crucial for all of us to stay focused and committed to ensuring system-wide safety.
