Sunshine Coast Airport Airspace Changes Runway 13/31

Panoramic image of beach and ocean at the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia

Sunshine Coast Council led the Sunshine Coast Airport Expansion Project and has delivered the new runway (Runway 13/31). The new runway and associated flight paths became operational on 14 June 2020.

These flight paths will change the way aircraft operate as they arrive and depart from Sunshine Coast Airport.

For more information on flight paths and aircraft operations, view our Fact Sheets here. Following community feedback, we have included both the minimum and average heights for departures, as heights for departures can vary depending on aircraft type. Heights for arriving aircraft continue to be presented as minimum heights, as heights for arrivals are less varied.

We have provided FAQs here.

  • Sunshine Coast PIR recommendation implementation – Update

The Post Implementation Review (PIR) for Sunshine Coast Airport airspace and flight path changes as a result of the new runway was completed late 2023 with the release of the final report.

As some time has passed since PIR completion, we want to provide an update and confirm that work has commenced to investigate the recommendations of the PIR. Depending on the recommendation, this includes design work and detailed safety assessments. We also continue to monitor the progress of the Noise Action Plan for Brisbane, ensuring any actions being investigated give consideration to the outcomes and recommendations of the Sunshine Coast PIR.

We will soon release a program to show the timing of the first phase actions and an initial community engagement plan for delivery of the PIR recommendations.

  • Community Suggested Alternatives – Update

Sunshine Coast residents may be aware that in addition to conducting the Post Implementation Review (PIR) on Sunshine Coast flight paths, Airservices is also conducting a PIR on Brisbane’s new flight paths.

On 22 August 2022, Airservices released the Brisbane New Parallel Runway Flight Paths Post Implementation Review (PIR) Independent Review Final Report by Trax International (Trax) which includes a number of recommendations that have interfaces with the Sunshine Coast airspace.

In reviewing the Sunshine Coast community suggested alternative flight path submissions, we have also identified constraints with Brisbane’s airspace. To get the best possible outcome for both airspace PIRs, we have identified the need to complete these reviews in parallel. This will allow consideration of some suggestions from the Sunshine Coast that would otherwise be ruled out now due to the conflict with current Brisbane airspace operations.

We intend to provide a draft report for Sunshine Coast by the end of 2022. This will identify the suggested alternatives that are considered safe and feasible to progress through the Airservices Airspace Change Program and those that require more detailed consideration in parallel with Brisbane PIR outcomes. A Sunshine Coast community meeting will follow the draft report release to enable detailed discussion of the PIR findings, outcomes and next steps.
