Hobart Community and Industry Suggested Alternatives

In April 2022, Airservices completed the Post Implementation Review (PIR) for the Hobart flight path changes that were implemented in November 2019. Airservices conducts PIRs into airspace and flight path changes to verify assumptions about potential environmental and community impacts and to determine the effectiveness of the environmental impact assessment and community engagement processes. The outcomes of PIRs inform future changes and improve the overall change management process.

The scope of the Hobart PIR was developed in consultation with the community and considered the supporting environmental assessments for the flight path changes, community information regarding aircraft operations and forecast noise

Airservices conducts PIRs into airspace and flight path changes to verify assumptions about potential environmental and community impacts and to determine the effectiveness of the environmental impact assessment and community engagement processes. The scope of the Hobart PIR was developed in consultation with the community and considered the supporting environmental assessments for the flight path changes, community information regarding aircraft operations and forecast noise, and flight path suggested alternatives from the community and industry.

The PIR identified an array of alternatives suggested by the community and industry, some of which were found to be viable for further investigation and detailed assessment. We have commenced detailed evaluation of these alternatives and have divided them into two packages of work.

Package 1: Commencing Q4 2022

Recommended action 5: Airservices will undertake further assessment of a potential Noise Abatement Procedure (NAP) change to specify preferred runway use at sensitive times of the day, including further community and industry engagement to determine what times of day or night would apply and operational requirements for exemptions.

We are planning to meet with residents in the vicinity of Forcett, Dodges Ferry, Carlton, Carlton River, Primrose Sands, Connellys Marsh and Dunalley in November 2022 to seek input on the NAP proposal. In addition, we will be hosting an online community consultation session for those residents unable to attend the in-person sessions. Information about these community consultation sessions will be provided on this page and we encourage you to subscribe to this page to receive updates.

Package 2: Commencing Q1/Q2 2023

Airservices is jointly considering all the recommended actions that require further airspace design, and associated assessments, to ensure a rigorous process for the consideration of any changes. These proposals are:

Recommended action 4: Airservices will undertake further assessment of the community suggested change of moving the RWY30 RNP-AR STAR 2-3km to the east.

Recommended action 6: Airservices will undertake further investigation of the community suggested flight path change to move RWY30 arrivals to the east coast (over water) to determine an appropriate STAR starting waypoint and validate the track miles assessment.

Recommended action 7: Airservices will undertake further assessment of a suggested new RWY30 departure route (alternative 2) to New Zealand.

Recommended action 8: Airservices will undertake further assessment of a suggested new RWY12 departure route (alternative 2) to New Zealand.

Recommended action 9: Airservices will undertake further assessment of a suggested new RWY12 arrival route (alternative 1) from New Zealand.

Recommended action 10: Airservices will undertake further assessment of a suggested new RWY30 arrival route (alternative 1) from New Zealand.

We are planning to engage with the community on these proposals in early to mid-2023 when further design and assessment work is completed.
