Perth Airport New Runway flight paths

Statement of Need

Perth Airport is building a new runway parallel to its main Runway 03/21, expected to be operational in 2028. This will increase airport capacity and improve operational efficiency for airlines operating at the airport. The new runway will require new flight paths.

In 2018, Perth Airport released a Major Development Plan (MDP) for the new runway, including indicative flight path corridors to assess impacts. The MDP underwent a 12-week public comment period, with submissions reported here, and was approved by the Federal Minister for Infrastructure in November 2020.

Building on the MDP’s flight path corridors, Airservices Australia is engaging with the community to develop the final flight path design. Multiple engagement rounds will occur between 2026 and 2028 in accordance with the Airservices Community Engagement Standard (Level 1 – most complex proposals).

Frequently asked questions

1) Where can I see the detailed flight paths?

Airservices is currently in the engagement planning and information sharing phase (Step 1). In this step, we are seeking your feedback on how we can best engage with you throughout the detailed flight path design process.

We invite you to provide feedback on our Initial Community Engagement Plan by Friday 3 July 2026 via the survey on our homepage, or via email or post:

Detailed flight paths will be released as part of Step 2, when Airservices engages with the community on the preliminary detailed flight path design (anticipated to occur in late 2026 or early 2027). At that time, we will provide detailed information on flight path locations, the potential frequency of use and noise levels. As part of Step 2, we will also host in-person community engagement sessions and webinars, where technical specialists will be available to answer questions.

2) How can I be notified when the flight path design is released?

We encourage you to subscribe to project email updates via the ‘Stay Informed’ button on the homepage. We will also be advertising our engagement sessions and feedback period via social media, digital, radio and press ads.

3) Who is Airservices Australia?

Airservices is Australia’s air navigation service provider. We are a Federal Government-owned organisation responsible for the safe operation of Australia’s airspace through the provision of Air Traffic Control (ATC) and Aviation Rescue and Fire Fighting Services (ARFFS). We are also responsible for delivering flight path and airspace changes.

While Perth Airport is responsible for obtaining government approval to construct the new runway (received in 2020), Airservices is responsible for the detailed flight path and airspace design, along with air traffic management when the runway opens.

4) I am a pilot/ aviation operator. Where can I find information on how these changes will affect me?

We will engage industry operators in tandem with community engagement activities on the detailed flight path design. We have a dedicated industry engagement page and encourage you to subscribe for industry engagement updates here.

5) What suburbs are going to be exposed to aircraft noise in the future?

Perth Airport has developed an interactive web-based Aircraft Noise Information Portal that is available at perthairport.com.au/aircraftnoise. The portal provides information about current flight paths, indicative future flight corridors, and the Australian Noise Exposure Forecast and Number-Above noise maps for each suburb.

Airservices will conduct further noise assessments throughout the development of the detailed flight path design. This process will identify areas that will potentially notice a change to aircraft operations following the opening of the new runway. These locations, along with updated noise contours and other flight path information, will be presented during the initial round of community and industry engagement on the preliminary detailed flight path design in late 2026/ early 2027.

6) Why isn’t there a curfew (restrictions on night movements) at Perth Airport?

Airport curfews are legislated and regulated by the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts.

Perth Airport’s Master Plan 2026 Preliminary Draft notes that the viability of many of Perth’s international air services depend on linking with connecting networks through hub airports, such as Dubai and Singapore. Any restrictions on the operations of Perth Airport would lead to a significant loss of air services, which may result in a reduction of service levels and an increase in the cost of flying for both businesses and members of the community. The operational conditions at Perth Airport are also critical to maintaining and supporting effective freight and logistics.

7) I have a concern about current flight paths near me. Who can I speak to?

We are engaging the community on future flight path changes to support the new runway when it opens. Changes to current flight paths are out of scope of this engagement.

For enquiries or complaints about current aircraft operations, please contact our Noise Complaints and Information Service.
