Sydney Airport Runway Safety Works - 16R Threshold Replacement

Thank you for your participation in this project. Works are now complete and consultation on these temporary works have concluded.

Sydney Airport is about to start runway safety works on Runway 16R (the northern end of the main north-south runway) which involve removing and replacing the runway threshold. The works will commence on 31 July 2021 and will take up to four months to complete.

Why are the changes necessary?

The main north-south runway threshold requires a full reconstruction (i.e. removal and replacement) to a pavement design that is suitable for aircraft loadings. The project involves reconstructing the 9,200 square metre concrete threshold at the northern end of Runway 16R. The existing threshold slabs were constructed in 1968 and are now at a stage where they require replacement.

What is changing?

While the works are being undertaken, Runway 16R will be closed to arriving aircraft. Flights that can no longer arrive on Runway 16R will be distributed to other runways and flight paths in accordance with the Long Term Operating Plan (LTOP) noise sharing mode priorities, weather and operational conditions. While aircraft will continue to use existing flight paths, you may experience a change in the number of aircraft on the flight paths near you.

  • Project update - 16R Threshold Runway Safety Works now complete

Sydney Airport has now concluded essential runway safety works to replace the 9,200 square metre concrete slab at the start of runway 16R. The runway has been recommissioned and flights to the runway have resumed. Communities to the north of the airport under the approach to the main runway such as St Peters, Sydenham, Marrickville, Stanmore, Lilyfield and Leichhardt may notice flights for the first time in 4 months.
