Assessment Outcome – Recommendation 4 (Runway 30 short approach relocation)
Airservices Australia has completed its assessment of Recommendation 4 from the Hobart Post Implementation Review (PIR), which proposed relocating the Runway 30 (southern runway end) short approach (RNP‑AR) 2-3 kms to the east. This assessment has considered operational feasibility, safety requirements and community noise impacts, as well as feedback received from the community and industry.
The analysis identified that while the proposed relocation would reduce the number of people overflown in the current location, it would shift short approach operations to an area already affected by long approach arrivals and jet departures, increasing the cumulative noise burden. It also found that shifting the short approach would reduce the practical ability to share noise between arrival paths to provide periods of respite.
Based on the assessment, Airservices does not consider it reasonable to progress this suggested change through to implementation.

We recognise that this outcome will be disappointing for some members of the community, however where proposals present options that will shift operations to new areas, we must give full and proper regard to wide range of factors in making these complex decisions.
We invite questions and feedback on the assessment report until 16 August 2026.
