Planning Flight Paths into the Future

Airservices Australia is shaping how we design, develop and implement flight path changes into the future.

Between 14 January 2020 and 9 March 2020, we conducted a national stakeholder consultation on Airservices Draft Flight Path Design Principles.

This consultation did not include discussions on specific flight path changes occurring in any one location. The consultation was focused solely on the Draft Principles.

As part of our commitment to engage with our stakeholders, we hosted a series of conversations across the country, regarding the principles that should guide the design, development and implementation of flight paths in Australian airspace, now and into the future.

A Safe & Sustainable Aviation Future

A safe, secure and efficient aviation industry underpins business, trade and tourism activities that contribute to Australia’s economic prosperity.

We need to cater for the changing nature of aircraft operations, air traffic growth, airport expansion and advances in aviation technology, while keeping aviation safety as our first priority.

Aircraft noise is an inevitable impact of aviation activity. While airports are essential economic assets that provide communities and businesses with great benefits, residents living within 75 km of an airport may experience noise and visual impacts of aircraft arriving, departing or overflying the airport.

We need to manage the impacts of aviation activities and this requires a careful balance of ensuring safety, operational efficiency, protecting the environment and minimising the effects of aviation noise on the community, wherever practicable.

    We are conducting a national stakeholder consultation on Airservices Draft Flight Path Design Principles that will shape how we design, develop and implement flight path changes into the future

    This consultation will not include discussions on specific flight path changes occurring in any one location. The consultation will be focused solely on the Draft Principles.

    We are using a range of approaches to engage with stakeholders, including a National Online Survey, six Face-to-Face Community Workshops, three Industry Stakeholder Panels, and two Community Pop-up Stalls (to promote completion of the Survey).

    To ensure we are able to hear the views of all stakeholders, regardless of location, we encourage you to have your say via the Online Survey.

    Locations for Community Workshops and Industry Stakeholder Panels were selected to ensure we hear views from across Australia. In selecting locations, we ensured that we reflected a balance of aircraft operations (including general aviation, civilian and military), capital city and regional areas, and had access to broad community, government and industry representation.

    The Online Survey is open until 9 February 2020. We look forward to receiving your feedback on the Draft Flight Path Design Principles.

    Once finalised the Flight Path Design Principles will guide flight path design, development and implementation in the future.


  • Community Workshops

    Airservices will be hosting 6 Community Workshops and 2 Community Pop-Ups in locations across Australia.

    We want members of the general public to be able to examine the Draft Flight Path Design Principles, and express their views and priorities regarding flight path design.

    This will help contribute to the development of the final Flight Path Design Principles that will guide flight path design, development and implementation into the future.

    We will be hosting Community Workshops at the following locations:

    • Melbourne – Wednesday, 29 January 6pm – 9pm (full)
    • Launceston – Thursday, 30 January 6pm – 9pm
    • Gold Coast – Monday, 03 February 6pm – 9pm
    • Rockhampton – Tuesday, 04 February 6pm – 9pm
    • Adelaide – Wednesday, 05 February 6pm – 9pm
    • Perth – Thursday, 06 February 6pm – 9pm
