Sydney Airport Essential Runway Resurfacing Stage 2

What is going to change?

Sydney Airport is commencing Stage 2 of essential maintenance works on their main runway, RWY 16R/34L.

The works are expected to commence on 11 October 2020 and continue for approximately 9 weeks, subject to weather conditions.

Commonwealth legislation allows Air Ambulance and a limited number of small freight and general aviation flights to operate on the main north-south runway between 11pm and 6am. The resurfacing work means that, with Commonwealth approval, these flights can only safely use the parallel north-south runway.

Using this runway means people living in Kurnell, Banksmeadow, La Perouse, Phillip Bay, Little Bay and parts of Botany may hear aircraft noise between 11pm and 6am. Some people living outside of these areas may also hear aircraft noise during these times.

Why are the changes necessary?

Just like motorways, highways and other roads, runways require essential maintenance to prevent damage from occurring and potholes from forming. Sydney Airport must undertake this work between 11pm and 6am and work may occur seven days a week.
