Kowanyama Non Directional Beacon (NDB) Utilisation

Consultation has concluded

Kowanyama Airport (YKOW), owned by the Kowanyama Aboriginal Shire Council, has requested Airservices to remove the Kowanyama (KOW) Non-Directional Beacon (NDB) and advised they do not wish to renew the associated land lease agreement. The Council has recently received Government funding to build additional housing within the township. The location of the NDB, along with the associated infrastructure, is a preferred area to undertake a residential development.

KOW NDB is included in the Backup Navigation Network (BNN). The BNN is a network of terrestrial navigational aids which serve as a contingency capability in the rare event of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) failure to ensure safe completion of flight. The NDB RWY 12 approach procedure is available for use.

YKOW is an uncontrolled airfield located in Queensland approximately 460KM North West of Cairns on the Gulf of Carpentaria. YKOW is 60NM from Cairns radar coverage at 10,000 feet.

YKOW has alternate NDB navigational aids:

  • Normanton 140NM to the South
  • Coen 130NM to the North East
  • Cairns 240NM to the South East

There are also alternative GNSS area navigation (RNAV) approach procedures available for use at YKOW.

Request for Industry Feedback:

In response to Kowanyama Airport’s request to remove the NDB at the airport, Airservices is seeking industry feedback to understand if there is any ongoing operational requirement for the NDB before a decision for its removal or relocation can be made. Airservices invites you to provide feedback using the survey form, found at the bottom of this page. This survey will close 28 July 2021.
